Hot Air Balloon Rides through the Gorge

Three hot air balloons lined up on the launch field awaiting the arrival of passengers, for an early morning balloon ride over the game reserves of the Cradle of Humankind. The passengers arrived just as the glow of dawn started to light up the Gorge, running a passage through the Swartkops mountains, and out over the Crocodile River on the other side.

A few blasts of the burners had the balloons upright and ready for flight. Passengers boarded, a quick safety briefing, and a smooth take-off, had the balloons using a cool current to drift gently towards, and into the gorge. Towering rocky cliffs looming over the balloons on each side, the sound of the river rushing below, and the morning chorus of birds, creates one of the most special experiences one can have on a hot air balloon ride. Deeper into the gorge, the cool air is compressed, speeding up the drift of the balloons, and eventually spilling them out above the Crocodile River.  The reds of sunrise soak into the landscape, which is scattered with herds of game outlined in the soft light, perfect for the photographic enthusiasts on board. From drifting inches above the waters of Lake Heritage, to soaring a 1000ft into the skies, there is never a moment without a spectacular view.

All too soon it is time to return to terra firma. The gentle bump of landing signals the popping of champagne corks, while a group of on-looking zebra take in the celebrations of the marvel of a hot air balloon safari.
